Sometimes, the first step is saving a child's life is simply being aware and knowing the signs when you see them. There can be many forms of child abuse including sexual, emotional and physical. Each type of abuse can induce certain behaviors (some of which may appear normal while others can be very alarming). In most cases, children will exhibit at least one or two signs outwardly and but may present additional abnormal behaviors in different settings.

Knowing The Signs of Abuse or Neglect


  • Being excessively withdrawn
  • Unexplained bruises
  • Burns, cuts, rashes
  • Unexplained physical injury
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Age regressive behaviors (sucking thumb, etc)
  • Nightmares or trouble sleeping
  • Running away
  • Often wears concealing clothes
  • Fear of adults
  • Advanced sexual knowledge for their age
  • Changes in mood - clingy or attention-seeking
  • Bedwetting
  • Changes in school performance
  • Perfectionism - there may be no signs at all
  • Constantly hungry or dirty - (neglect)
  • Very small or thin for their age (neglect)
  • Begging or stealing food
